Xbox announces new disc-to-digital feature for physical media — lets players claim digital versions of their games, with support for Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming

Microsoft has announced a new disc-to-digital feature for Xbox consoles, allowing owners of physical game discs to claim digital entitlements and play the games as if they had purchased them digitally. This service, revealed by the tech giant, will provide Xbox users with access to features such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming.

In a blog post on Xbox Wire, Microsoft confirmed that the new feature will support digital benefits, bridging the gap between physical and digital media. Xbox Insiders can begin testing the feature from August 31. Most disc-based games for Xbox One and Series X consoles support the new feature, meaning that players can access their digital library through the disc, including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported.

The company has confirmed that thousands of titles are supported, with more additions planned over time. However, it is worth noting that not every title will be available at launch. While this development brings a fresh perspective to physical media, it also signifies a move away from physical media towards online, digital libraries, encouraging users to transition from physical to digital.
