Xbox's New Disc-to-Digital Program Gives Physical Games a Digital Future

Xbox announces a new program allowing physical game discs to gain digital entitlements, combining the convenience of digital downloads with the permanence of physical media. Announced ahead of testing for Xbox Insiders starting August 31, players can claim a digital entitlement by simply inserting the disc and launching the game.

This digital copy will be playable entirely without needing the disc, as long as the player or a family member is logged in. The digital entitlement also grants access to features like Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming for supported titles. Microsoft assures that the physical disc will continue to function normally after the digital entitlement is claimed.

However, the license is revokable and can be transferred to a new account if the disc is resold or loaned. Not all Xbox One and Series X titles are supported due to publishers actively opting in, and some discs may be incompatible due to manufacturing inconsistencies, preventing original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs from being included.

This program represents a significant step toward ensuring players can confidently retain their games for years to come.
