Wontumi’s withdrawal won’t make significant difference to NPP chairmanship race – Asah-Asante

Political science analyst Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante has stated that Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, withdrawing from the NPP's national chairmanship race will not significantly impact the contest. Wontumi announced his decision to withdraw just days after receiving nomination forms, citing consultations with his family and close allies.

He expressed a desire not to burden the NPP with his personal ambitions, especially given his current situation. Although Wontumi has a strong grassroots following and considerable influence within the NPP's Ashanti Region support base, Dr. Asah-Asante believes his withdrawal will not substantially alter the race's dynamics. He noted that the NPP tends to favor candidates who have gained experience within the party and demonstrated their commitment to its structures and traditions.

According to Dr. Asah-Asante, it takes time for the party to recognize and support individuals who have matured and learned the ropes before endorsing them for major positions. He acknowledged Wontumi's contributions to the NPP, particularly in the Ashanti Region, where he served the party and made his mark. He also highlighted the experience of other contenders, such as former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko and former General Secretary John Boadu.

In terms of experience, Afoko, though out of the party for some time, is considered one of the seasoned politicians. Boadu, despite his relative youth, has remained committed to the party and its traditions, building the necessary capacity to vie for the position. Dr. Asah-Asante's remarks come as the NPP prepares to elect its next national officers, with the chairmanship race expected to draw considerable attention as the party seeks to reposition itself ahead of future elections.
