Wontumi’s withdrawal will have little impact on NPP chairmanship race – Asah-Asante

Political analyst Dr Kwame Asah-Asante says former Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako's decision to back out of the national chairmanship race will have minimal impact on the contest. Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, pulled out of the race shortly after his team obtained nomination forms. In his decision, Wontumi cited family consultations and a desire to avoid the race being driven by his personal ambitions, especially given his current situation.

Although Wontumi has a strong grassroots following and considerable influence within the NPP, especially in the Ashanti Region, Asah-Asante believes his withdrawal will not significantly alter the political landscape. According to Asah-Asante, the NPP typically looks for individuals with party experience and proven commitment to its structures before considering them for leadership roles.

"They want people to go through the mill. They want people to be matured. They want people to learn the ropes, and then you abide by the rules of the game," he explained. "Once they realize that you have reached that zenith, that apex, then quickly you will see support from nowhere. They rally behind you for power," he added. Asah-Asante acknowledged Wontumi's contributions to the NPP, particularly in the Ashanti Region, stating that the former regional chairman had served the party well.

However, he pointed to other contenders, such as former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko and former General Secretary John Boadu, noting their experience and commitment to the party. As the NPP prepares to elect its next national officers, with the chairmanship race expected to draw significant attention, the race for NPP General Secretary position remains a critical aspect of the party's strategy as it seeks to position itself for future elections.
