US Military Says It Killed Four in Strike on Alleged Drug-Smuggling Boat in the Caribbean

The U.S. military carried out an airstrike on a vessel in the Caribbean Sea on Tuesday, resulting in the death of four individuals, according to the Pentagon. The incident follows a series of strikes targeting alleged drug smugglers, with the total number of casualties reaching at least 227 in 68 strikes since the Trump administration intensified its efforts against so-called "narcoterrorists" almost a year ago.

The military claimed the attack was conducted on known smuggling routes, though they did not present evidence to substantiate the claim that the vessel was transporting drugs. A video posted on social media purportedly showed a moving boat followed by a flash, though the Pentagon did not confirm its authenticity.

This strike occurred just two days after another operation in the eastern Pacific Ocean, which resulted in the death of two individuals suspected of drug trafficking. The surge in military strikes coincides with the Trump administration's push for deals with allied nations to expand its offensive operations into multiple Latin American countries.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced during a visit to Panama that Colombia, Guatemala, and Honduras had agreed to allow the U.S. to conduct joint military operations against criminal groups on their territory. However, Guatemala has denied reaching such an agreement. Ecuador has also engaged in similar missions with the U.S. in March.

President Donald Trump has declared the U.S. in "armed conflict" with drug cartels in Latin America, justifying the strikes as a necessary escalation to curb the influx of drugs into the United States and prevent fatal overdoses. However, the administration has provided scant evidence to substantiate its assertions of targeting drug smugglers.
