Portage County high school sports recaps for the week of August 24-30

On Tuesday, August 25, Rootstown claimed victory in boys soccer with a 4-1 win over Crestwood. Zach Pastor scored two goals in the first 2 minutes and 27 seconds, with a third goal added in the second half. Crestwood managed one goal in the eighth minute. The team's streak of wins remained at 3-0-0. In girls golf, Roosevelt defeated Cloverleaf 189-193, 266, and Tallmadge 266.

Brooke Beatty led the team with a score of 39, while Aubrey Byler (49), Makenna Ward (50), and Coco Golden (51) also contributed to the victory. In girls soccer, Rootstown remained unbeaten with a 7-3 win over Crestwood. Freshman Layla Haynes scored four goals, with Josie App, Paisley Day, and Elliott Smallfield adding one goal each.

Sammy Smolk and Charlie Wilson provided assists. In field hockey, Field defeated Cuyahoga Falls 5-0, with Brooklyn Wilson scoring twice. Molly Murphy and Odessa Hottensmith each scored a goal, while Odessa Hottensmith and Ruby Roberts added two more goals each. Zoe Kramer made three saves to secure the shutout. In volleyball, Rootstown defeated United 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 25-21.

Five players recorded four-plus kills, with Lilly Kamenash having the team-high of seven. In another volleyball match, Bloomfield lost to Windham 25-23, 23-25, 24-26, 30-28, 15-11. Despite Makenna Jones scoring 13 kills and Kyleigh Simpson with 11 assists, Makenzi Blockinger's stellar 13 points, including six aces, were not enough to secure the win.

In Waterloo's girls soccer game against Springfield Local, the Vikings fell despite two goals from Alexis Henry and two assists from Koralee Jenior. Abigail Roberts contributed six saves for Waterloo, which led in corner kicks and shots on goal. Finally, in girls golf, Springfield fell to Rootstown 236-202, despite Charlie Wilson's 50 and Morgan Giebel's 52.
