Lithuania Sets an Example in Supporting Ukraine, European Council President Says

European Council President António Costa commended Lithuania's steadfast support for Ukraine during his visit to Vilnius as part of a tour of EU capitals, according to UATV English. Costa acknowledged President Gitanas Nausėda for Lithuania's ongoing assistance, particularly the country's crucial military aid. Costa observed that Lithuania is leading by example through its unyielding and vocal backing of Ukraine, including substantial military support.

He credited the bravery of the Ukrainian Armed Forces for altering the battlefield dynamics and pledged to intensify pressure on Russia until it engages in negotiations. Costa also emphasized the interconnectedness of Europe's security with the advancement of EU enlargement, specifically mentioning Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkans on the path to membership.

He viewed Lithuania's commitment to enlargement as a wise investment for the future peace, security, and stability of the continent. Costa appreciated Lithuania's decision to prioritize enlargement during its upcoming EU Council presidency. Costa further highlighted Lithuania's strategic location, positioning the nation as a "true expert" on the security challenges confronting the EU's eastern border and the Baltic region.

He detailed the significance of hybrid threats, such as drone incursions, in necessitating enhanced air defense and border protection, stressing that these issues demand collaborative efforts at the EU level. Costa affirmed that bolstering defense and security capabilities is vital for Europe to dissuade adversaries and react to any aggression.

Costa expressed confidence in Lithuania's professionalism and dedication to European priorities, noting that the country will hold the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union in January 2027.
