Attacks on OSP linked to discomfort over its investigative powers – Kissi Agyebeng

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has alleged that there are coordinated attacks against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) aimed at weakening the institution. According to Agyebeng, these attacks stem from discomfort with the OSP's mandate, particularly its independent investigative powers related to corruption cases. At a press conference, Agyebeng stated that the OSP has conducted an internal review of the criticisms and acknowledged making mistakes, but argued that such errors are not sufficient grounds to dismantle the institution.

He emphasized that mistakes are common and that the OSP has taken steps to rectify them. Agyebeng questioned the logic of seeking to collapse a public institution due to errors, asserting that shutting down every public agency for minor mistakes would be extreme. He attributed the sustained criticism to the OSP's powers and functions, specifically its independent investigative capabilities and prosecutorial mandate.

Agyebeng noted that these functions generate resistance from some public officers, leading them to desire the OSP's abolition. He affirmed that the institution welcomes legitimate criticism but rejects calls to dismantle it due to the alleged attacks on its existence and powers.
