AMA arrests 6 drivers, mates for allegedly charging unapproved fares in Accra CBD

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) made six arrests in the Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. The suspects, three drivers and three bus conductors, or "mates", allegedly charged passengers fares exceeding approved rates on routes to Awoshie, Kasoa, and Madina. The operation came after AMA Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey warned against commercial operators raising transport fares arbitrarily.

The suspects, Joseph Bonney, Francis Morgah, and Foster Osei as drivers; Benjamin Ofori Atta, Emmanuel Aduafo, and Emmanuel Paa Ekow Amissah as mates, were arrested under AMA's (Operation of Commercial Vehicles) By-laws, 2017. The by-laws forbid commercial vehicle operators from charging fares above those approved by the Assembly.

One Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus was intercepted for charging GH¢15 per journey instead of the approved GH¢7.50. Another Toyota Hiace on the CBD-Kasoa route was seized for charging GH¢15 when GH¢10 was authorized. A third Toyota Hiace on the CBD-Madina route was stopped for charging GH¢10 instead of the approved GH¢8. The arrested individuals were handed over to the police and will face La Motor Court on August 26 for further legal proceedings.

Allotey assured of ongoing enforcement efforts to curb fare violations, urging both transport operators and passengers to adhere to approved rates and report overcharging incidents.
