At least 17 killed as flash flood sweeps part of Nepal-Tibet border

A devastating flash flood swept across a portion of the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday, resulting in at least 17 deaths and hundreds of people reported missing. The flood, triggered by a glacial collapse and debris flow, ravaged villages and inflicted extensive damage to roads and infrastructure. Search and rescue operations are underway on both sides of the border, with authorities in Nepal and China expecting a significant rise in the death toll in the coming days.

Among the missing are numerous tourists from various countries, including Indians, Nepalis, Americans, Ukrainians, Malaysians, Australians, and UK nationals. The exact number of casualties remains uncertain, with Nepal reporting 826 people unaccounted for, 644 of whom are tourists. China's state broadcaster CCTV stated that the death toll in Gyirong county, Tibet, has risen to 558, including 260 foreign nationals.

The flood's impact on the Nepali and Chinese figures may be overlapping, as it is unclear if any of the missing individuals have been counted twice.
