Hundreds missing in flash flood on Nepal-Tibet border as villages destroyed

Hundreds of people are missing after devastating flash floods swept through the Nepal-Tibet border region, destroying roads, bridges, and power projects. At least nine individuals were reported killed, with hundreds more feared dead as authorities scramble to rescue those stranded. The Nepal Tourism Board revealed that 384 travelers, including 291 foreigners, are still missing.

Entire villages were engulfed by floodwaters, with destroyed homes and roads unable to accommodate rescue helicopters due to the high water levels in Nepal's Rasuwa district. District administrator Narendra Pariyar warned that there could be "heavy casualties or loss of property" and urged residents near the Bhote Koshi river to relocate to higher ground.

Official sources from China expressed grave concern over potential "major casualties" as a mudslide struck a critical land crossing between the two nations. China's President Xi Jinping pledged a full-scale search operation and called for enhanced monitoring and early warning systems to avert future disasters. Over 430 megawatts of electricity, approximately 12% of Nepal's total hydropower capacity, was impacted by the floods.

Rescue efforts involved both police and military personnel, with Prime Minister Balendra Shah urging people to move to safer locations. The Bhote Koshi river, which originates in Tibet, has a history of causing severe damage, as evidenced by a similar flood last year that killed nine people and left 24 missing after it destroyed a border bridge.
