Akpabio mourns veteran journalist, Dotun Oladipo

Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, President of the Senate, has mourned the passing of esteemed journalist and former publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo. Akpabio described the loss as deeply painful to Nigeria's media sector and the nation as a whole, acknowledging Oladipo's substantial contributions to journalism, public discourse, and the rise of online media in Nigeria.

The Senate President reached out to Oladipo's family, friends, colleagues, and professional associates, especially those belonging to the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), of which Oladipo once held the role of Emeritus President.

Akpabio lauded Oladipo as a courageous, principled, and dedicated journalist who devoted a significant portion of his life to the pursuit of truth, responsible journalism, and societal advancement. He emphasized how Oladipo's passing represents a profound loss to his family, the journalism profession, and Nigeria. The Senator highlighted Oladipo's immense contributions to online journalism and his commitment to professional excellence, integrity, and public interest, which will remain indelible.

Drawing inspiration from the philosopher John Stuart Mill, Akpabio noted that a free and responsible press must listen, question, and speak truth to power – attributes that Oladipo embodied throughout his life. The Senator expressed his hope that God would grant the deceased eternal rest and provide his loved ones with the strength to bear the irreparable loss.

Akpabio also called upon members of the media to uphold and build upon Oladipo's legacy of professionalism, integrity, courage, and unwavering dedication to the public interest.
