Trump threatens to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America'

U.S. President Donald Trump broached the idea of renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America during a Tuesday statement, as his trade conflict with Canada intensified. The proposal, accompanied by a map depicting the altered name, echoed a previous move by Trump to dub the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America last year. Trump's language grew increasingly belligerent following Canada's announcement of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products following the breakdown of trade negotiations on Friday.

Trump asserted on his Truth Social platform that the United States was giving "serious consideration" to renaming Lake Ontario in light of their anticipated diminished commercial ties with Ontario. The Great Lake, which shares its name with Canada's province of Ontario and New York bordering the lake, has Toronto as its largest city on its northwest shore. Later, Trump posted the map with "Lake Ontario" crossed out and replaced with "Lake America."
