Democrat jabs Trump over Lake Ontario threat: 'Let’s just call it Lake Natalie'

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump suggested renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America as his trade conflict with Canada intensified. Trump illustrated his proposal through a map highlighting the alternative name, paralleling his earlier renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America the previous year. Tensions escalated after Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products following the breakdown of trade negotiations between the two nations.

Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social, that the U.S. was carefully considering the name change, as there was little expectation of future commerce with Ontario. Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes straddling the Canada-U.S. border, shares its name with the Canadian province of Ontario, alongside the American state of New York.

Toronto, Canada's most populous city, is situated on the lake's northwestern shoreline. Later, Trump tweeted a map with "Lake Ontario" crossed out and replaced with "Lake America".
