Selangor marks Sukma victory with Sept 1 holiday, honouring athletes and 10,000 volunteers

Selangor's government has designated September 1 as a special holiday to celebrate the state's triumph in the 2026 Malaysia Games, known as Sukma, which took place in Selangor. The Selangor Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, made this announcement at the Games' closing ceremony held at Aneka Walk, SA Sentral, on August 25. Amirudin praised the Selangor athletes who represented the red and yellow team, having won a total of 101 gold, 73 silver, and 71 bronze medals out of 468 sporting events.

Amirudin expressed his delight with the remarkable performance of the Selangor athletes, who exceeded their target of 80 gold medals and set a new record by surpassing their best performance from the first time Selangor hosted the Games 28 years ago. The Selangor contingent also outshone its previous best performance of 10th overall Sukma title, previously achieved in 2016 in Sarawak.

The announcement of the special holiday on September 1, 2026, was made in appreciation to the 10,000 volunteers who contributed throughout the Games. Amirudin commended the athletes, coaches, and contingent officials for their commitment and hard work in achieving this success and emphasized his gratitude to all parties who supported the Selangor contingent throughout the Games.
