Ranveer Singh rejects intervention in Don 3 row, says only an ‘MoU’ exists: What it means for Farhan Akhtar

In the ongoing dispute between Ranveer Singh and Farhan Akhtar over Ranveer's abrupt departure from Don 3, the film body has been engaged once again. Farhan Akhtar and his producing partner Ritesh Sidhwani sought the help of the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association (IMPPA) after their initial appeal to FWICE failed. IMPPA invited Ranveer to present his side, but the actor's team firmly rejected any involvement, even warning of legal action if they were not excluded.

This isn't the first time Ranveer has resisted film body involvement; earlier, he had refused FWICE's non-cooperative directive. The crux of Ranveer's defense lies in claiming that no formal contract existed between him and Excel Entertainment for Don 3, only a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This distinction has led to a legal question: does an MoU hold legal weight, or is it simply a preliminary step?

Media and entertainment lawyer Sanjay Vasudevan explained that while an MoU's enforceability depends on its language, terms, and specific details, its absence of a separate, long-form agreement doesn't necessarily mean it lacks legal force. However, even if the MoU is binding, the remedies available would likely be limited to financial damages or injunctive relief, not compelling someone to perform personal creative work.
