'Quite clear what I need to do' — UK PM Burnham, European leaders plan to lobby Trump on Patriot missiles for Ukraine

U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, alongside European leaders, plans to visit the United States in September to advocate for the provision of Patriot missiles to Ukraine, according to Burnham's statement on August 24. Russia has been targeting Ukrainian cities with frequent and intense missile attacks, exploiting the country's limited air defense capabilities.

Burnham, during his visit to Kyiv on Independence Day, expressed confidence that the issue of Ukraine's shortage of interceptor missiles would be resolved in the coming weeks. This concern has intensified as winter approaches, raising fears about Kyiv's ability to defend against future attacks. European leaders, including European Council President Antonio Costa, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, and Estonian President Alar Karis, along with Nordic and Baltic leaders, are also planning to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss the issue.

The meeting may coincide with the UN General Assembly, with Burnham suggesting a potential gathering of the 'Coalition of the Willing' to further discuss the matter. Britain has recently agreed to share classified technical information on Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missiles with Ukraine, potentially aiding the country's domestic production of these weapons.

Ukrainian officials hope that domestically-produced Fire Point ballistic missiles, including an anti-ballistic missile similar to the U.S. Patriot system, could become combat-ready within 2-3 months.
