Burnham planning to visit US in September to lobby Trump on Ukraine

Andy Burnham, the UK Prime Minister, intends to visit the United States in September to advocate for Ukraine's defense needs with President Trump. During an interview with Bloomberg, Burnham expressed his eagerness to attend the UN General Assembly in New York during that month. Although the specifics of the trip are not yet confirmed, it is likely that he will make the journey.

This trip marks Burnham's first to the US since assuming office as the Prime Minister in July. Following his official visit to Ukraine on Monday, during which he pledged to continue pressuring Russia, Burnham met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv and chaired the first meeting of the coalition of the willing, established by the UK and France under his predecessor, Sir Keir Starmer.

The UK government has agreed to provide Ukraine with blueprints for British-made components for the Scalp missile, a long-range weapon derived from the UK's Storm Shadow cruise missile. This move will enable Ukraine to manufacture the weapon domestically. In light of escalating Russian strikes in recent weeks, including one that killed at least 16 people last week, Burnham emphasized the UK's unwavering support for Ukraine.

Ukraine has been dependent on American supplies of Patriot interceptor missiles to counter Russia's ballistic missiles; however, stockpiles are dwindling due to the war in Iran, leaving Ukraine exposed to Russian attacks. Zelensky expressed his hope to secure 300 Patriot missiles before winter, when Russia is likely to intensify its assaults on energy infrastructure, as it has done in the past.

During the Bloomberg interview, Burnham conveyed his confidence in resolving the issue but acknowledged that the solution would likely involve multiple layers and negotiations. He stated that it is not just the US that can supply Ukraine with Patriots; other players with whom the UK has influence can also contribute. In July, President Trump had previously declined to agree to Ukraine receiving Patriots, stating that it was a "hard thing to give away" technology that is "incredible."

The group, comprising Burnham, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, aims to strengthen Kyiv's air defenses as an urgent priority. They also condemned Moscow's systematic and escalating strikes against Ukraine's cities, critical infrastructure, and civilians, vowing to constrain Russia's war chest through sanctions and actions against the "shadow fleet."

Burnham reaffirmed the UK's steadfast support for Ukraine, stating that Ukraine's security is their security and their friendship with the UK will endure beyond Russia's illegal war.
