UK’s Burnham plans US trip in September to lobby Trump on Ukraine needs

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced plans to visit the United States in September to advocate with President Donald Trump for Ukraine's access to Patriot air defense missile stocks. This trip will mark Burnham's first time visiting the US since assuming the role of prime minister, according to Bloomberg in Kyiv on Monday evening.

Burnham, who chaired the meeting of Ukraine's allies for the first time and held a bilateral meeting with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, expressed optimism that Ukraine's current predicament in defending against Russian ballistic missile strikes could be resolved. European leaders are considering organizing another Coalition of the Willing meeting around the UN General Assembly meeting in New York to secure American interceptors and stocks from other countries.

Burnham emphasized that while the UK does not utilize the Patriot missiles Ukraine requires, other European nations possess influence that could contribute to the solution. The absence of the Patriot missiles due to Iran's war and reduced global stocks has led Trump to backtrack on a prior promise to provide or enable Kyiv to construct interceptors for US-made Patriot missile defense systems.

Ukraine has repeatedly requested 300 Patriot missiles to withstand the winter, with President Zelensky contemplating purchasing 5% or 10% of the United States' Patriot missile stockpile to survive the harsh season. Consequently, Ukraine has encountered a surge in Russian ballistic attacks, resulting in 437 civilian deaths in July 2026, a 30% increase compared to the previous year.
