Paul Afoko files NPP chairmanship nomination, promises to reunite party ahead of 2028

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Paul Afoko has formally submitted his nomination to run for the party's National Chairmanship election, asserting his intention to reunite the party, bolster its grassroots organizations and lead efforts to secure the party's return to power in 2028. Afoko submitted his finalized nomination documents at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

Following his submission, he addressed party executives, delegates and supporters, citing his motivation to rebuild confidence, restore unity and fortify the party in the lead-up to the 2028 general election. Afoko pledged to focus on three core objectives in his campaign: "Reunite. Reorganise. Recapture." He called for an end to the divisions caused by previous internal conflicts and maintained that all members must have equal opportunities within the party, regardless of their support for the candidates.

Afoko also emphasized the need to strengthen the party's grassroots structures, particularly polling station executives and constituency organizations, as well as its communications structures, women and youth. He stressed that the NPP's efforts to regain government must commence immediately, not merely in the months preceding the 2028 election.

Additionally, Afoko pledged to collaborate closely with the party's presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, should he be elected to lead the party, vowing to collaborate loyally and diligently to restore the NPP to government in 2028. Rejecting the notion that regional considerations should influence the selection of the NPP National Chairman, Afoko urged delegates to evaluate candidates based on their competence, integrity, experience and temperament, rather than their geographical origins, asserting that geographical distinctions are not recognized by the Constitution.

The filing officially places Afoko in the NPP's National Chairmanship race as the party prepares to elect new national officers ahead of its 2028 campaign.
