Eid-el-Maulud: Refuse to be divided by politicians – CAN to Christians, Muslims

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on Nigerians, regardless of their religious beliefs, to stay united as the country approaches the 2027 general elections. In a message marking this year's Eid-el-Maulud, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh urged both Christians and Muslims to eschew being divided along religious lines.

The commemoration of Eid-el-Maulud, which marks the birth of the Prophet of Islam, is an opportunity for Muslims to reflect on virtues such as mercy, justice, compassion for the poor, honesty, and peaceful coexistence.

CAN stated in its statement that these values are especially pertinent for Nigerian citizens today, as they encourage people to care for one another, uphold human dignity, and strive for peace despite the exploitation of differences for political or personal gain. The association highlighted the challenges faced by many Nigerians, including rising living costs and insecurity, which have left people weary of empty promises and longing for tangible improvements in their lives.

Archbishop Okoh appealed to the Federal Government and leaders at all levels to move from mere promises to concrete actions that address the citizens' needs for enhanced security, economic relief, and leadership that prioritizes their welfare. He emphasized that true leadership is demonstrated through visible actions rather than empty assurances.

As the country prepares for the 2027 elections, CAN also appealed to politicians to refrain from exploiting religion or ethnicity for political advantage, emphasizing that while elections may come and go, the bonds that unite Nigeria must remain intact.

CAN stressed that Christians and Muslims must collectively refuse to be divided by those who seek to profit politically from the differences among them. They are urged to protect their communities, care for the vulnerable, and work together towards peace. The association expressed hope for Nigeria, but emphasized that this hope must be translated into action, responsible leadership, good citizenship, and justice.
