Ukraine-Krieg: EU genehmigt milliardenschwere Rüstungshilfe für die Ukraine

Brussels - The EU has approved new military aid worth 6.1 billion euros for Ukraine on the country's Independence Day. The funds are intended for missile defense systems, rockets, ammunition and radar installations, the EU Commission announced. The approval comes amid an escalation of Russian attacks with ballistic missiles and drones, with 376 missile strikes registered alone in July.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated, "As Russia intensifies its attacks, we are expanding our support to enable Ukraine to protect its population and defend its airspace." The aid marks Europe's unwavering and concrete commitment to Ukraine on its Independence Day. The financial assistance is part of a new loan of up to 90 billion euros, to be paid in several tranches, to help Ukraine continue its defense against Russian invasion forces and prevent a sovereign debt crisis.

Previous procurement plans worth around 16 billion euros had already been approved, of which 8.35 billion euros had already been disbursed. Most of the procurements are expected to be carried out by EU defense companies. With the national holiday on August 24, Ukraine commemorates its declaration of independence on August 24, 1991, overshadowed once again by the Russian invasion war that began four and a half years ago on February 24, 2022.
