Thai PM meets security chiefs after coordinated attacks in three southern provinces

Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul convened an emergency gathering with top security officials on Sunday after a string of coordinated attacks in three southern provinces. The incidents occurred overnight, though Prime Minister Anutin was en route north to assess the devastating floods in the province of Nan. The attacks targeted Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala provinces, with no military or police involvement.

Only three civilians sustained injuries and were reportedly recovering. The violence primarily involved bombings, arson, and property damage, with a 7-Eleven in Pattani notably set ablaze. Despite the lack of publicly announced responsibility, the attacks are widely attributed to the Barisan Revolusi Nasional Melayu Patani (BRN), the dominant insurgent group in the region.

The BRN seeks self-rule for the three southernmost provinces, which are predominantly Muslim and home to the majority of the Muslim population in Thailand. The group has engaged in a long-standing struggle for autonomy, with intermittent violence since 2004. The most recent escalation came in July, when armed assailants attacked a security checkpoint in Narathiwat, killing five paramilitary soldiers and wounding six civilians.

Security analyst Don Pathan suggests that the BRN carries out these attacks to negotiate leverage with the Thai government, as the group's fighters are unimpressed by military displays and aim to showcase their capabilities. The BRN's attacks primarily target civilians, but the ultimate objective is to send a clear message to the Thai authorities about their operational capacity.
