Murkomen announces major reforms to modernise Kenya Prisons Service

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced significant reforms to modernize the Kenya Prisons Service, with a focus on rehabilitation, technology, skill development, and successful reintegration of inmates into society. The announcement was made on August 24, 2026, following a visit to the Prisons Staff Training College (PSTC) in Ruiru, Kiambu County, where Murkomen attended the passing-out parade of Kenya Prisons Service cadets.

Murkomen outlined the government's commitment to enhancing infrastructure, welfare services, and security environment adaptation within the correctional system. During the event, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki commissioned the 150-bed Wanini Kireri Magereza Level IV Hospital at PSTC. This hospital will provide comprehensive healthcare services to prison officers, their dependents, and inmates, as well as the wider Ruiru community.

The government aims to invest in infrastructure, training, and officer welfare to strengthen service delivery. A fleet of 41 vehicles was also flagged off for deployment to various correctional facilities across the country, enhancing mobility and operational capacity for the Kenya Prisons Service.

Murkomen praised the families, trainers, commanders, and instructors for their support in preparing the newly trained officers. The development marked the 27th Officer Cadet Passing-Out Parade, attended by Kindiki. A total of 36 cadet officers completed a rigorous 13-month training program, which covered classroom instruction, practical sessions, and field attachments in correctional facilities nationwide.

These officers have been equipped with the necessary skills for secure custody, correctional management, rehabilitation, and reintegration programs. They are now set to embark on their careers within the Kenya Prisons Service, initiating their roles in the country's correctional system.
