UK to help Ukraine build Storm Shadow long-range missiles: Why it matters

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced on Monday that the United Kingdom intends to assist Ukraine in manufacturing its own long-range missiles by providing classified technical data for British components. The Prime Minister made the announcement alongside other international leaders during Ukraine’s Independence Day celebration in Kyiv. MBDA, a British defense firm, will share details about the U.K.-manufactured parts for the SCALP missile to facilitate Ukraine's assembly of these weapons.

The SCALP missile is a French-produced variant of the U.K.'s Storm Shadow missile, featuring a range exceeding 250 kilometers (155 miles). It is designed to target stationary objects like hardened bunkers and critical infrastructure, owing to its advanced navigation system and high precision. Both missiles are in service with the British, French, Italian, and several other export military forces. They have been utilized in combat operations in Iraq, Libya, and Syria.

Furthermore, Ukraine and France are collaborating to establish assembly lines within Ukraine to produce the missiles, enabling Kyiv to create its own version of these weapons. However, the feasibility and timeline of such a production process remain uncertain. According to Douglas Barrie, a senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the UK's decision to share classified information is significant, yet the overall impact hinges on the speed of establishing local assembly capabilities in Ukraine.

The enhanced weaponry will likely not aid Ukraine in the immediate future, given the country's ongoing need for additional Patriot interceptor missiles to bolster its defenses against Russian aggression.
