Four arrested over boxing champion's murder in South Africa

Four individuals have been apprehended in South Africa in relation to the murder of boxing champion Zolani Tete, who was ambushed and shot outside his home on Friday, according to officials. Tete, 38, was fatally wounded in the incident, which occurred in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, while a 27-year-old female passenger he was traveling with was also shot and is currently hospitalized.

One of the arrested suspects, a 22-year-old, is set to make his first court appearance on Monday, where he is facing charges of murder and attempted murder. The remaining suspects, arrested on Sunday, are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. Two of them have been charged with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, though it remains uncertain whether they will also be charged with murder and attempted murder.

Tete, a two-time world champion, held the WBO bantamweight title from 2017 to 2019 and the IBF super-flyweight title in 2014. He was later banned for four years, which expired in July. According to reports, Tete was in his car waiting for his house gate to open when two armed assailants in balaclavas emerged and began firing multiple shots at him and his passenger.
