Four arrested over boxing champion’s murder in South Africa

In South Africa, four individuals have been apprehended in connection with the murder of boxing champion Zolani Tete, who was fatally shot outside his residence on Friday. Tete, a 38-year-old former two-time world champion, was ambushed in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, along with a 27-year-old female passenger, who was also shot and is currently hospitalized.

One of the suspects, a 22-year-old man, will face court on Monday and is charged with murder and attempted murder. Tete, who held the WBO bantamweight title from 2017 to 2019 and the IBF super-flyweight title in 2014, was temporarily banned for four years, which expired in July. The other two suspects, arrested on Sunday, face charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition but have not yet been charged with murder or attempted murder.

The motive behind the attack remains unknown. Tete, a two-time world champion, was in his vehicle waiting for his gate to open when two armed assailants in balaclavas opened fire. South Africa, known for its high murder rate, lost one of its finest fighters, according to Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie.
