Ex-Gombe governor Goje debunks defection rumour, reaffirms APC membership

Danjuma Goje, a former Governor and Senator representing Gombe Central, has dispelled rumors that he is considering a defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC). The news emerged after hundreds of his supporters from Gombe Central and surrounding areas visited his residence seeking information about his political future ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Goje, a founding member of the APC, reaffirmed his membership in the party during a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Ahmed Kashere.

Addressing the supporters, Goje emphasized his steadfast commitment to the APC. "I have not defected to any political party. As a founding member of the APC, I remain a member of the party," he stated. Given his extensive experience and positions held in the country, Goje argued that it would be inappropriate for him to leave the party at this point in his life simply to contest for the Senate.

However, Goje acknowledged that the situation might be different if he were contesting for a higher position. He urged all his supporters across Gombe and beyond to cooperate with party leaders and remain loyal to the APC. This sentiment was echoed by Goje, who has been active in politics for nearly 45 years, having contested elections eight times and won all of them.

Reflecting on his political career, Goje recounted his numerous achievements, including serving as a two-term governor and being elected to the Senate five times, with his first term during the Abacha era. He also mentioned holding various positions in the country over the years, emphasizing his unique privilege and the loyalty of his constituents. Despite retiring from active politics in 2019, Goje returned to contest the 2023 Senate election due to the strong support from his constituents.

Goje assured his supporters that his empowerment programs would continue regardless of his political status. This clarification arrives as political activities and consultations intensify in preparation for the 2027 general elections, with politicians and supporters across the country positioning themselves ahead of the polls.
