El-Sayed distances himself from popular streamer’s comments on Israel and Jewish Americans

Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Michigan, has distanced himself from progressive commentator Hasan Piker after Piker suggested that pro-Israel rhetoric could lead to backlash against American Jews. The controversy could complicate El-Sayed's campaign as he seeks to unify Democrats in a battleground state.

Piker argued that opposing Israel is not necessarily antisemitic, but that some "Jewish institutions" teach a monolithic view of Jews. This led House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to call the claim "dangerous and antisemitic." El-Sayed issued a statement supporting the right of Americans to advocate for their beliefs without fear of violence and emphasizing that he is the one speaking for the campaign. Piker's spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment.
