El-Sayed distances himself from popular streamer’s comments on Israel and Jewish Americans

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan distanced himself on Monday from progressive commentator Hasan Piker, who had recently made controversial comments about pro-Israel rhetoric potentially leading to backlash against American Jews. This controversy could pose a challenge to El-Sayed's efforts to unify Democrats in a battleground state crucial for determining Senate control.

El-Sayed, along with other Democratic hopefuls, had previously utilized Piker's online platform to attract younger voters and participated in campaign events together during the primaries. However, Piker's recent remarks appear to have strained their relationship. During a lengthy livestream, Piker argued against the notion that opposing Israel is antisemitic, stating that American Jews are not all uniformly supportive of Israel; he claimed that "Jewish institutions" teach the dangerous propaganda that Jews are monolithic.

He warned that if American Jews maintain the belief in their singular investment in Israel, there will eventually be repercussions against them, although he did not specifically target the state of Israel. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat, strongly condemned Piker's statement, calling it "dangerous and antisemitic" and emphasizing that there is "zero justification for threats against the safety of our Jewish brothers and sisters."

In response, El-Sayed issued his own statement later that day, distancing himself from Piker's comments.
