Disney-FCC Lawsuit: Media Watchdogs Seek to Enter First Amendment Case

Media watchdogs Frequency Forward and the Media Action Center, along with numerous ABC television station viewers, have filed a motion to join the ongoing legal dispute between ABC and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Their objective is to safeguard viewers' First Amendment rights. This motion was submitted alongside ABC's recent suit accusing the Trump administration of retaliating against the network due to its broadcasts.

The suit also seeks to prevent the FCC from taking or threatening to take any actions against Disney, ABC, and their eight owned-and-operated television stations concerning early license renewal applications.

Sue Wilson, the Media Action Center founder, emphasized that "the public airwaves belong to We the People, not to Disney, the ABC stations that it owns, or its shareholders." The watchdogs argue that their intervention in the case would give viewers a voice in the process and highlight that their First Amendment rights cannot be compromised behind closed doors.

Art Belendiuk, the legal counsel for the petitioners, stated that "the FCC's censorship campaign is not just harming ABC; it is harming ABC viewers." He added that "every day, the stations face a choice between exercising independent editorial judgment at the risk of losing their licenses or capitulating to the Trump Administration."

This pressure is already impacting newsroom and programming decisions, which is why they are fighting to protect viewers' First Amendment right to uncensored and fair programming and reporting.
