Canada braces for long trade war with US lasting beyond midterms: report

The United States has imposed new tariffs on a variety of Canadian goods, including hockey sticks, dairy products, and even national flags. The White House's actions are part of an escalating trade war with Canada. Notably, the automotive industry remains exempt from these levies, which is significant considering their historically intertwined relationship.

Additionally, alcohol imported from Canada, such as Crown Royal and Fireball, is subject to higher import duties. This includes both the iconic Canadian whiskey and other spirits.

In response to President Trump's previous tariffs and threats of making Canada the 51st state, eight of Canada's ten provinces retaliated by refusing to stock American wine and spirits in their stores. This boycott has led to a staggering drop in American spirit exports, with figures indicating a decline of over 70%. President Trump's aggressive stance is reminiscent of a schoolyard bully, as described by conservative Ontario premier Doug Ford, who urged for unity in the face of these escalating tensions.

While the tariffs are already in effect, it may take a few weeks before American consumers notice the impact on the products they purchase. Canada's Prime Minister has vowed to respond with equal tariff rates on US products starting September 8, setting the stage for a potentially prolonged and costly trade war. The back-and-forth between the two nations continues to be a focus of international attention.
