Agency says forest campsite could 'risk life'

The Environment Agency (EA) has raised concerns over a proposed campsite in Hamsterley Forest, County Durham, warning that it could pose a risk to life and potentially pollute waterways. Forestry England and Forest Holidays are seeking permission to construct 70 cabins, a campsite, cafe, restaurant, shop, and staff accommodation in the forest.

The EA's objection specifically highlights the campsite's location on a flood plain at the bottom of a valley, which could endanger campers during heavy rainfall. Durham County Council planning manager Stephen Reed declined to comment on the EA's concerns, as it is a live application. The EA also pointed out that flood warnings may arrive too late for an effective evacuation, as the campsite's escape routes are forest tracks crossing or adjacent to watercourses, which could become hazardous during floods.

The agency recommended relocating the campsite to an area with less flood risk to avoid "risk to life and property" and "danger for all people." Additionally, the use of a non-mains foul water drainage system could lead to an "unacceptable risk of pollution," the EA stated. Local resident Marc Shepherd expressed his concerns, as a nearby stream would receive wastewater from the proposed campsite.

He worries about potential illness from wastewater being discharged into the stream, which his family frequently enjoyed. Hamsterley Forest, established in the 1920s, is popular among walkers, cyclists, and those engaged in lumber production. However, the EA remains concerned about the lack of consideration for the environmental impact of noise and disturbance on local species and habitats, as well as the potential presence of water voles and otters.

Planning manager Stephen Reed assured residents and interested parties that the EA's concerns would be carefully considered during the planning process.
