Battle over ‘Linda Mwananchi’ name moves to political parties tribunal

Nairobi, Kenya – The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal is set to address an urgent case filed by the Linda Mwananchi Movement, which is challenging the Registrar of Political Parties' refusal to reserve the name for their proposed political party. The dispute has brought the Office of the Registrar to the forefront of a growing controversy surrounding the "LINDA" political brand. The movement, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, is aiming to formalise its structures ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The tribunal, chaired by Innocent Muganda, has prioritized the case and instructed the Registrar to respond promptly. The applicants – Pauline Njoki Njoroge, Faith Odhiambo, and Michael Caroli Omondi – argue that the name became unavailable after another entity registered "LINDA" using the same acronym. Although the movement initially received approval on June 4, 2026, the Registrar later reversed its decision, citing the registration of the opposing party.

This development complicates an ongoing dispute over the Linda Mwananchi name, which dates back to February when Charles Wanyonyi also applied to reserve the name Linda Mwananchi Party of Kenya. The initial rejection of Wanyonyi's application was based on concerns about the similarity to the slogan "Linda Mkenya, Boresha Kenya." The Sifuna-led movement contends that its association with the name is well-established, having attracted 55,592 members and 13,232 volunteers as of August 13.

The applicants are seeking a definitive resolution from the Registrar, prohibiting any processing, reservation, or registration of the names "LINDA," "LINDA MWANANCHI," or any substantially similar variations, pending the outcome of the case. They argue that the inconsistent decisions made by the Registrar threaten their constitutional right to political participation under Article 38 of the Kenyan Constitution.

As political activity intensifies in preparation for the 2027 elections, Linda Mwananchi has emerged as a prominent opposition platform. The movement's leaders are considering formal registration as a political party while simultaneously exploring alternative options in case the name dispute is not resolved in their favor. The tribunal has requested the Registrar to file a response by August 24, after which the applicants will have until August 25 to submit a supplementary affidavit.

The case is scheduled to be heard on August 25 at 2:30pm, marking the beginning of the first legal battle over the Registrar's handling of the proposed party name.
