Google’s inevitable ‘Pixel Watch Ultra’ should copy the Fitbit Air

It seems likely that Google will eventually give in to the "Ultra" smartwatch trend, and when a Pixel Watch Ultra arrives, I hope it takes inspiration from Fitbit Air. The 9to5Google Weekender newsletter covers this story as part of its focus on Google's biggest news, with weekly and weekday updates. While the obsession with "Ultra" smartwatches isn't clear to everyone, 80% of customers purchasing these devices likely don't need their extensive features.

Google hasn't joined this market yet, but with the Pixel Watch 5 nearing its limits, it's possible the company may enter this segment. The Pixel Watch exists in an odd position, marketed as a fitness-focused device but featuring a premium design that seems out of place in rugged environments. Its exposed domed glass isn't as scratch-resistant as sapphire, and its design doesn't compare to that of Samsung and Apple's offerings.

A Pixel Watch Ultra could differ significantly, shifting focus from a sporty design to a more rugged one. This could involve using a metal build like that of Apple and Samsung, or a different approach that I prefer. Google has a winner in the Fitbit Air, so a Pixel Watch following in those footsteps would be ideal. A key aspect to add would be the band mechanism, as seen with the Fitbit Air.

The core of the Fitbit Air pops out of the band, making it easily adjustable for a sporty smartwatch. A sturdy case could surround the watch, keeping the display exposed with a protective lip. Will this happen? It's likely that a more sport-focused Pixel Watch will be released soon, but it's also possible we'll see more fitness trackers with screens.
