Nigeria’s sovereign cloud moment: Securing the infrastructure behind the digital economy, By Shuaib S. Agaka

Nigeria is advancing its digital infrastructure with a focus on national resilience, innovation, and digital independence. The country is moving beyond simply adopting cloud technology to shaping the conditions under which it can support these goals.

The Federal Executive Council has approved the acquisition of two next-generation High-Throughput Communication Satellites, NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B. According to Nairametrics, these satellites will be delivered by Thales Alenia Space of France and Israel Aerospace Industries, and will expand Nigeria's satellite capacity, reducing dependence on external infrastructure.

The new satellites will complement terrestrial broadband networks, particularly in hard-to-reach areas, and support various digital applications, including high-capacity broadband, broadcasting, enterprise connectivity, and government services. They will also serve national security and defence communications requirements, as well as improve access to digital services in education, healthcare, agriculture, and financial services, as stated by NIGCOMSAT Managing Director Nkechi Egerton-Idehen.
