‘Opened Pandora’s box’: Putin warns Ukraine after strike on Russian economic infra

In a bid to bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities, France has announced accelerated missile deliveries following a detailed conversation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on August 22. The decision comes as a direct response to a series of devastating Russian missile strikes on Ukrainian civilians over the past week.

Macron pledged to strengthen support for Ukraine, specifically mentioning the delivery of interceptors. In a subsequent social media post, Macron elaborated on the support, stating France would also assist Kyiv in communicating with international partners that possess Patriot air defense systems. This comes after Zelensky expressed the critical need for Patriots to protect Ukrainian civilians from Russian ballistic missiles.

Additionally, Macron confirmed France's willingness to provide licenses enabling Ukraine to produce missiles, including ASTER missiles for SAMP/T air defense systems and SCALP cruise missiles. Last month, France had already granted Ukraine a license to produce these weapons.

Zelensky, during his conversation with Macron, also briefed him on Ukraine's efforts to develop an anti-ballistic system with European allies. He emphasized the urgency of supplying interceptors for Patriot systems to aid Ukraine through the winter. Zelensky further stated Ukraine's readiness to purchase interceptors and highlighted the importance of any such efforts.

Subsequent meetings with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and former U.S. envoy to Ukraine General Keith Kellogg, who now works at the America First Policy Institute, further underscored Ukraine's critical air defense needs. Both Germany and Ukraine are reportedly prepared to sign a deal for the joint production of high-speed BARS jet-powered drones, with Germany financing the initial phase of production.

The recent escalation of Russian attacks, including bombings in Kryvyi Rih and Kyiv, have highlighted the ongoing vulnerability of Ukraine's air defense systems.
