Indore’s Food Fame Gets A Bitter Bite As 20% of Samples Fail Test

Indore, known as the "culinary hub" of Madhya Pradesh, is facing criticism after a recent food safety crackdown revealed that 20% of samples tested failed to meet hygiene and cooking standards. The issue has spread from street food vendors to upscale hotels and renowned institutions like schools. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has even mentioned Indore's fast-food spots in his speeches, highlighting the city's popularity in the food world.

However, recent raids at establishments like Hotel Signature and Bhavans Prominent International School have exposed deep-seated problems. According to senior food officer Manish Swami, over 3600 food samples were collected in Indore last year, with around 15% failing laboratory tests. During a special campaign from July to August this year, more than 25,000 kg of ghee and around 15,000 kg of milk products were inspected, with 20% of samples found unsafe for consumption due to suspected adulteration.

The administration has taken action against Shishukunj International School after complaints of children falling ill after eating there. The food was found to be prepared in unhygienic conditions, leading to the school's kitchen being sealed temporarily. Bars holding licenses under excise rules have also faced suspension following serious violations.

The incident has sparked concern among residents, with many questioning the trust they place in premium hotels and restaurants.
