European leaders condemn Israel’s West Bank settlement project

European leaders have strongly criticized Israel's decision to issue construction tenders for the E1 settlement project in the West Bank, labeling it as "unacceptable." The leaders of the UK, Canada, Norway, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands issued a joint statement condemning the move. They highlighted the widespread opposition from the international community against the expansion of settlements and expressed serious concerns privately and publicly.

The E1 settlement project is seen as a significant setback for the two-state solution, a solution that aims to create separate states for Israelis and Palestinians. The leaders argued that the project would exacerbate tensions in the West Bank, increase settler violence against civilians, and limit the economic activities of Palestinians.

They emphasized that international law unequivocally deems Israeli settlements in the West Bank unlawful, a stance reaffirmed by the United Nations Security Council. The Western leaders urged Israel to halt construction and further expansion of settlements, warning that continuing the project would harm Israel's international reputation and peace efforts.

They also threatened developers with potential legal repercussions, citing possible violations of international law. British Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prévot warned that the E1 project would divide the West Bank, isolating East Jerusalem and undermining the viability of a two-state solution. He urged Israel to withdraw the tenders and cease settlement expansion.
