Every morning, I step into a room filled with mosquitoes. While the majority of individuals seek to evade them, my daily activities revolve around raising, observing and studying these insects. At first glance, this may seem peculiar, but comprehending mosquitoes offers crucial insights into the efficacy of malaria prevention measures.
In 2024, malaria affected 282 million people, resulting in 610,000 fatalities. Novel tools, such as dual-active ITNs and malaria vaccines, are further enhancing our ability to protect communities. Nevertheless, we must remain vigilant. ITNs' effectiveness depends on mosquitoes' continued susceptibility to the insecticides within them.
Mosquitoes evolve rapidly, developing resistance to insecticides and altering their behavior. These modifications impact the performance of malaria prevention tools. Ongoing monitoring and research are vital to keep pace with mosquitoes' evolution, ensuring that existing and future ITNs continue to function effectively. What most people do not witness is the scientific process behind an ITN.
Prior to a mosquito net reaching a household, it undergoes years of research, thorough testing, and quality assurance. At the VNVL in Ghana, my team and I work with mosquito populations exhibiting various levels of insecticide resistance. We maintain and meticulously monitor the mosquito colonies, utilizing them for standardized laboratory testing of Vestergaard ITNs, such as PermaNet Dual, a cutting-edge ITN.
This work supports quality assurance and product development by providing reliable data on how our nets perform against the mosquito populations they aim to target. Much of this work remains unseen, yet it is crucial for ensuring that our ITNs function as intended. This year, we will celebrate 15 years of collaboration between Vestergaard and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, which has contributed to establishing and maintaining technical expertise in entomological testing in Ghana.
In addition to laboratory facilities, the partnership has fostered specialized skills in mosquito rearing, laboratory testing of ITNs, and insecticide resistance monitoring. Last year, this commitment was further solidified through a Memorandum of Understanding between Vestergaard, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, and the Ghana National Malaria Elimination Programme.
This strengthened public-private partnership advances Ghana's goal of malaria elimination. Every mosquito we examine and every net we assess serves a purpose beyond the laboratory: ensuring that the products people depend on maintain their effectiveness. On World Mosquito Day, I am reminded that combating malaria is a collective effort, and my role involves contributing to this endeavor.
However, more needs to be done. Protecting people goes beyond employing the right tools; it also entails safeguarding them from a disease that evolves alongside humans and continues to pose a threat to millions. The greater our understanding of mosquitoes and their changes, the better equipped we are to protect vulnerable communities.
By appreciating the mosquito's behavior and evolution, we enhance our ability to shield at-risk populations.
