The FIFA crisis escalates: UEFA, AFC and Concacaf consider ousting Infantino

The governance crisis within FIFA is moving to a new phase, with UEFA, AFC, and Concacaf exploring the possibility of initiating a motion of censure against FIFA President Gianni Infantino, according to Reuters. This comes after the failure of his project to allow private capital into the commercial side of the World Cup. The pressure on Infantino is mounting once more, as the three continental confederations – UEFA, AFC, and Concacaf – are analyzing the feasibility of such a move, Reuters reports, citing senior officials familiar with the discussions.

If successful, this unprecedented scenario would shake the football world's industry and organization. Notably, Reuters states that there has never been a motion of censure against a FIFA president in its 122-year history. The three confederations involved in the conversations are UEFA – which includes the Real Federación Española de Fútbol – AFC, and Concacaf, representing North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

However, FIFA's statutes do not contain any specific provisions governing a potential censure motion. On the other hand, the Confederación Africana de Fútbol (CAF) has publicly backed Infantino, while six Arab federations, including Qatar and Morocco, have recently shown their support for the FIFA president. The controversy remains heated.

Regardless, FIFA's presidency will be put to a vote next March, when Infantino plans to re-present himself as the organization's top candidate. His opponents have yet to propose an alternative candidate.
