South Africa hold Australia to Hockey World Cup draw thanks to Mustapha Cassiem brace

South Africa secured a thrilling 2-2 draw with three-time champions Australia in the FIH Hockey World Cup pool campaign on Thursday at the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre, Belgium. This statement performance marked a significant turnaround after two defeats to Spain and Ireland, showcasing South Africa's defensive intensity and attacking ambition when combined.

The game's turning point came from Mustapha Cassiem, who scored both goals from penalty corners, earning South Africa their first point of the tournament. Opening the scoring in the fourth minute, Cassiem stunned the previously unbeaten Kookaburras. Australia responded through Joel Rintala in the 38th minute and Ky Willott five minutes later, but South Africa swiftly responded with Cassiem's second penalty corner goal in the 44th minute.

The South Africans held firm through the final quarter to secure the deserved draw, ending Australia's perfect tournament start. Cassiem attributed the team's success to their mentality and praised the coaching staff and players for a strong performance. The result pushed Australia to seventh place, while South Africa advances to the 9th-16th classification phase with renewed confidence.

In the women's tournament, China dominated China, defeating South Africa 5-1 at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands. Despite a strong performance from South Africa following an early lead by Zou Meirong, China quickly established a 3-1 lead before clinching the victory with a fourth goal and Meirong's late double. The defeat ended South Africa's difficult Pool D campaign, where they also lost to England and India.

However, they will have another chance to finish the tournament strongly in the classification phase.
