Fifa vice-president withdraws support for Infantino after series of ‘controversial decisions’

BUDAPEST, Aug 20 — One of Fifa’s vice presidents has withdrawn his support from embattled president Gianni Infantino, citing a series of "controversial decisions". Hungarian football federation official Sandor Csanyi, who sits on the Fifa council, stated that Infantino has "lost the confidence I previously placed in you" due to the sudden dismissal of Kevin Lamour, the chief operating officer.

Csanyi's letter, obtained by AFP, cited "a number of controversial decisions" surrounding this year's World Cup, including Infantino's plans to outsource FIFA competitions to external parties. The letter concluded that the dismissal of Lamour "points to serious shortcomings in professional judgement, ethical standards and leadership".

European football body Uefa vice-president Laura McAllister also criticized the decision, stating that it sends a "deeply troubling message to all of us seeking change".
