Ex-Zambian minister killed in security raid on opposition

Former Zambian minister Mutotwe Kafwaya was killed in a security raid on a house linked to opposition leader Brian Mundubile, who alleges the election was rigged. The raid took place in Lusaka, the capital, the day after the presidential election. Kafwaya was fatally wounded during an exchange of fire with law enforcement officers.

Eleven people were arrested in the operation, with authorities accusing Mundubile's party of involvement in "insurgency" and "militia activity." The opposition leader denies these claims. Incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema won the election with 60% of the votes, while Mundubile received 38%. Mundubile plans to contest the results in court after alleging tampering during the tallying process.

The police confirmed Kafwaya's death, stating that a 49-year-old man was killed during a shootout with "unknown individuals." The election was largely peaceful according to regional and international observers, but concerns were raised about late reforms, media freedom, and access to the media.
