Digital platforms need take Pakistan's 'specific circumstances' into account, minister tells Google delegation

Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry met with a delegation from Google on Wednesday to discuss digital security, the effective use of social media against terrorism, and the timely regulation of online content. Chaudhry emphasized that Pakistan's geographical location differs from other countries and that digital platforms would need to take into account Pakistan's specific circumstances.

Terrorists use social media to spread fear and promote terrorism, making proactive monitoring of social media essential for Pakistan.

Google Pakistan's representative Kyle Gardner, as well as National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency Director General Khurram Ali and the Ministry of Interior Joint Secretary Malik Sanaullah, participated in the meeting. The delegation also included members of the Social Media Protection and Regulation Authority.

Following the meeting, Google's Senior Director David Weller assured Chaudhry that the company would cooperate to create a safe digital environment in Pakistan. The meeting took place a day after Google inaugurated its local office in Pakistan at a ceremony held at the Prime Minister's House. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the opening of the office as a "big milestone" and expressed great scope for a fruitful partnership with Google and for strengthening bilateral ties in various areas.

Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja highlighted that the opening of Google's office would strengthen Pakistan's talent pipeline and provide further support to the local technology ecosystem. She added that Google and other major international technology companies' presence would encourage more global firms to establish operations in Pakistan.

The country's IT exports had grown consistently by around 20 percent over the past two and a half years, and the freelancing economy had exceeded $1 billion this year. Khawaja highlighted the "whole-of-government" approach and the role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) in making it possible for Google's office to open in Pakistan.
