Digital platforms need take Pakistan's 'specific circumstances' into account, minister tells Google delegation

Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry met with a Google delegation on Wednesday to discuss the tech giant’s operations in Pakistan. The delegation included Senior Director David Weller and Google Pakistan's representative Kyle Gardner. During the meeting, Chaudhry emphasized that digital platforms must consider Pakistan’s "specific circumstances" when operating in the country.

He noted that Pakistan's geographical location differs from other nations and that terrorists exploit social media to spread fear and promote terrorism. To address these challenges, Chaudhry stressed the need for proactive monitoring of social media in Pakistan.

Weller pledged Google's cooperation with Islamabad to create a secure digital environment. The meeting took place a day after Google inaugurated its local office in Pakistan, marking a significant milestone in the company's partnership with the country. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the potential for fruitful collaboration between Google and Pakistan in various areas, emphasizing the prime minister's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja highlighted that the opening of Google's office would bolster Pakistan's talent pipeline and support the local technology ecosystem. She also mentioned the consistent growth of IT exports and the freelancing economy as evidence of the country's economic progress. Khawaja stressed the importance of the "whole-of-government" approach and the role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) in facilitating Google's office establishment in Pakistan.
