David Mark warns against use of state institutions to manipulate 2027 elections

Senator David Mark, the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has cautioned against the misuse of state institutions to sway the 2027 general elections, emphasizing that the integrity of the polls must be "non-negotiable". Speaking in Abuja, Mark also cautioned against violence, intimidation, and other electoral malpractices, asserting that the ADC expected a transparent, inclusive, peaceful, and interference-free election.

The former Senate President made these remarks during a meeting with a delegation from the International Republican Institute (IRI), which is in Nigeria to evaluate preparations for the 2027 elections. Mark highlighted the importance of the electoral process's credibility in determining public confidence in the outcome, expressing concern over the recurring abuse of electoral processes by governments and non-state actors.

He specifically cited the violence and intimidation witnessed during the recent Osun State governorship election, where over 30 people were reportedly killed, as a warning for the 2027 general elections. Mark urged that elections should not be treated as a violent struggle but as a democratic process allowing citizens to freely choose their leaders for their development and a better life.

He reiterated his party's commitment to a secure electoral process where every vote counts and is respected. As political parties and stakeholders gear up for the 2027 general elections, concerns over electoral violence, state institution neutrality, and the credibility of the electoral process have been a significant focus of discussions.
