Son of former Mexican president says US revoked his visa

Andres Manuel Lopez Beltran, the son of former Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, claims that the United States has revoked his visa, alleging a politically motivated decision by state secretary Marco Rubio and deputy secretary Christopher Landau. Lopez Beltran, known as Andy, addressed his concerns to US President Donald Trump via letter, which was released late Thursday.

He contended that US authorities had provided no evidence linking him to any crime or wrongdoing, and he accused Washington of targeting Mexican officials involved in organized crime. Reuters reported in October that the Trump administration revoked the visas of at least 50 Mexican politicians and officials, including those from various political backgrounds, as part of its anti-cartel crackdown.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed she was unaware of any Mexican investigations into Lopez Beltran and deemed the US visa revocations against politically exposed Mexicans a matter of national sovereignty. The US embassy in Mexico defended its actions, stating that visa cancellations occur when there are valid reasons, regardless of the visa holder's identity, location, or political views.

The state department spokesman emphasized that every visa decision is a national security decision. Lopez Beltran recently resigned from his role in the ruling Morena party, founded by his father, and plans to run for a seat in Mexico's lower house of Congress in the 2027 midterm elections. He accused US officials of labeling him as a communist, a threat to US security, or a narco-terrorist.

The 39-year-old politician expressed his hope for a response from Trump regarding his concerns and noted that he was willing to forego travel to the US, which he described as a period of hatred, racism, and drug addiction.
