Son of former Mexican president says US revoked his visa

Andres Manuel Lopez Beltran, a son of former Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, contends the United States has revoked his visa, alleging a politically motivated decision by state secretary Marco Rubio and deputy secretary Christopher Landau. In a letter to US president Donald Trump, released late Thursday, Lopez Beltran, known as Andy, claimed US authorities presented no evidence implicating him in any crime or wrongdoing.

Washington has escalated a campaign targeting Mexican officials suspected of involvement in organized crime.

The Trump administration reportedly revoked visas for at least 50 Mexican politicians and officials, including those from various political backgrounds, as part of its anti-cartel initiative. Visa revocations can apply to individuals involved in drug trafficking, corruption, or aiding illegal immigration, according to state department officials.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed ignorance of any Mexican prosecutors' investigations into Lopez Beltran, labeling US visa revocations against politically exposed Mexicans as an intrusion in Mexican politics. The US embassy in Mexico defended the visa revocation policy, stating they cancel visas when justified, irrespective of the holder's identity, location, or political stance.

Lopez Beltran recently resigned from the ruling Morena party, founded by his father, and plans to contest a seat in Mexico's lower house of Congress in the 2027 midterm elections. He accused US officials of labeling him a communist, a threat to US security, or a narco-terrorist. The 39-year-old politician expressed hope for a response from Trump to his concerns and stated he did not mind avoiding travel to the US, describing it as a time of hatred, racism, and drug addiction.
