Republicans won the redistricting competition. Don’t tell that to this California congressman

California Democrat Anne Smull, a retired feedstore owner, was eagerly anticipating Election Day to vote for her representative, Republican Kevin Kiley, in the House of Representatives. However, her plans have been dashed due to a recent change in her congressional district. California Democrats, motivated by Republican redistricting efforts in other states like Texas, have reshaped Kiley's district into six pieces, merging parts of it with a predominantly Democratic district in the state's wine country.

This alteration has left Smull feeling disappointed, as she had hoped to continue supporting Kiley, whose political beliefs align with her own. Smull is not alone in her frustration; other Democratic voters across the nation, particularly in states like Maryland, New York, and Illinois, are also facing similar predicaments. Following President Donald Trump's directive for GOP-controlled states to redraw their congressional districts ahead of the midterms, the Supreme Court's recent ruling has further facilitated Republicans' ability to redraw seats in Southern states, disproportionately impacting Black Democratic voters.

As a consequence, it is highly probable that more Republican voters in various states will experience the same predicament as Smull and other Northern California conservatives. Democratic lawmakers in traditionally red states have vowed to retaliate prior to the 2028 elections by splitting Republican-leaning districts, much like what occurred with Kiley's district in California.
