Republicans won the redistricting competition. Don't tell that to this California congressman

Lincoln, California resident Anne Smull, who identifies as a conservative, was looking forward to voting for her representative in Congress, Rep. Kevin Kiley, during the recent election. However, her plans were dashed as California Democrats redrew Kiley's district, incorporating his constituents into an overwhelmingly Democratic seat based in the state's wine country.

Smull couldn't help but feel betrayed, stating, "He believes in the same things I do. It feels sneaky and underhanded." Republicans initiated the redistricting process, but Democrats ultimately finished it, potentially benefiting from the Supreme Court's decision to loosen voting rights restrictions. This decision enabled Republicans to redraw more districts in the South, diluting Democratic representation across the region.

Kiley, a two-term congressman, recently left the Republican Party and ran as an independent in his new district, expressing his disapproval of partisan gerrymandering. Democrats argue that Kiley's switch was a political maneuver to secure his position, while he maintains that he remains a Republican in caucus, voting in line with GOP priorities.

Despite this, Kiley's supporters, like John Coburn, a retired business owner, express frustration with the Democrats' actions, stating, "I don't care about Texas, I live in California. 40% of the state is Republican, and we have zero voice."

For Democrats, the district's new political landscape presents a unique opportunity. Kiley, a former Democratic presidential hopeful, now caucuses with Republicans to retain committee seats. His Democrat opponent, former state Sen. Richard Pan, dismisses Kiley's independent status, claiming he was once a strong supporter of Trump's MAGA movement.
